What is a Great Idea?

Great Idea could have many different definitions. Each person can make their own definition in order to decide what is a Great Idea, and what is not one. The definition listed below is my interpretation of what makes up a Great Idea.
~A Great Idea is widespread, or has a far reach.
This means that the idea is well known, and can effect even the most remote areas. This also means that idea is known worldwide and still has an effect on the global level.
~A Great Idea has a lasting effect, lasts a long time, or changes the way something else, be it an object or abstract concept, is presented or perceived.
This means that the idea has been around a while, has had an impact in some way or another, and that impact has stayed for a long time. At the same time this impact changes the way that people look at an idea, object, or thoughts are looked at and portrayed throughout time.
~ A Great Idea can be personally applicable.
This means that someone can take the idea and apply it to themselves, either directly influence their thoughts or indirectly change some attitudes a person may have.
~A Great Idea inspires a change of some kind.
This change can be large or small, but this idea inspires someone to change something, modify an existing idea, or create a new one entirely.
~A Great Idea has to have influence over someone or something.
The Great Idea has the capability to persuade, or influence the way a person thinks, acts, or dresses.
~A Great Idea is the idea that "won".
This is where the survival of the fittest of Great Ideas comes into play. The ideas that have the largest following,

MTV and YouTube...

Both MTV and YouTube fit my requirements for a Great Idea. I will cover why both MTV and YouTube fit each point, and then move on to the next criterion. Widespread
~MTV is known on a global level. MTV first went to other countries in just 3 years after its first broadcast!  Also within 3 years, MTV was carried in over 25 million homes! YouTube is also available and accessible on a global level. "Today, the corporation owns more than 50 channels in 28 languages and 168 countries" (NPR's From Upstart to Parent Network). MTV's and YouTube's effect on the world has changed how people can listen to music, find new music, and see other people's videos. YouTube fits the criteria because it is available on a global level, and has, along with MTV, has affected the way music is seen or listened to.

Long Lasing, Lasting effect, and Change
~MTV has existed for over 20 years and is still going strong, which allows it to fill this part of the Great Idea aspect. Once again, MTV changed how people perceived music, and showed the new postmodern movement to the US and all people around the globe. YouTube, while still young, has definitely had an impact on the world of music and communication. This impact is that people can listen to all kinds of music for free, watch other people in their videos, and even post their own videos.

Personally Applicable
~MTV is an advertising vehicle. In all of the music videos, the viewer is shown all types of products. This has always been the case with MTV, and will probably not change. The advertisements make a person want to buy the item being pushed in the video. YouTube is more personally applicable than MTV in that anyone can upload videos that star them, their friends, and chronology their lives if they want to.

Inspires a Change
~ MTV inspired a change. First, the change was having African Americans on the station. Then, it was rap. After that, MTV began to have its own style of tv shows. MTV's success inspired others into starting similar programs of all music, like ABC, and USA ("Transforming America" by Robert Collins). In the music a changed occurred as well. MTV developed its own style of presenting the music. The music was flashier, with more special effects. YouTube, on the other hand, changed the way that people listen to music via the internet.

Influence
~MTV and YouTube both have influence over consumers. Both advertise and pitch items to their viewers. The control MTV and YouTube have is over what is "in", "new", or "hip".

The Idea That Won
~MTV put the only original competitor out of business. Now, there are some competitors of MTV, but even those do not compare to MTV. VH1 is well know, as well, but the owner is still the owner of MTV.  YouTube does not have any competitors that offer the same perks or services. YouTube is free, convenient, and easy to use/navigate. MTV has changed over the years in order to stay the dominant corporation in music and appeal to the younger generation (12-18 age group).
